It's since modernized, but you name the IE-only feature, it had it.plugins, BHOs, controls, every single esoteric IE security setting you could think of. One of my favorite IE-only web apps in terms of sheer number of proprietary features used was a well-known reservation system's agent front end. A surprising number of places are still stuck with some of this stuff today.I highly doubt anyone's using IE for web browsing but hopefully this will force those app vendors still around to modernize their stuff. That late 90s/early 2000s era was interesting in terms of Microsoft giving developers all sorts of crazy Nerf tools to "webify" their apps before every web app turned into a tower of JavaScript. I guess new Microsoft isn't too concerned about backward compatibility, or the danger of keeping IE accessible to users is too high? I guess Microsoft basically said, "OK folks, you get one more LTSC with IE, then we're killing it." Edge's IE mode only handles rendering/formatting quirks, so I can definitely see a lot of VMs being prepared to run whatever ancient app/site is needed.

There's still so much (old, yet surprisingly critical) proprietary software using IE-only stuff like BHOs, ActiveX, etc. Now if you will excuse me I have to go contact some legacy software vendors and ask when they plan to certify any version of Microsoft Edge for their applications.Įdit: forgot to add: Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge will be supported through at least 2029.

For a full list of what is in scope for this announcement, and for other technical questions, please see our FAQ. It also does not affect the MSHTML (Trident) engine. Note: This retirement does not affect in-market Windows 10 LTSC or Server Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications. With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications. Today, we are at the next stage of that journey: we are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Over the last year, you may have noticed our movement away from Internet Explorer (“IE”) support, such as an announcement of the end of IE support by Microsoft 365 online services. Honestly I thought we were going to have Internet Explorer around for a bit longer.
